Family folk lore within my family is that the Sweets came north from Kent after one of our number was threatened with being burnt at the stake in the time of Queen Mary’s reign. As yet I have no proof of this!

The farthest back I have been able to trace with certainty is James Sweet who married Janet Martin in 1702. This took place in Bowden.

I have found a number of connections back to Newcastle and Gateshead but I have yet to prove these. Select from the drop down menus above to find more of what I have recorded.

The Sweet surname is most prevalent in Devon, Somerset and Cornwall particularly in the 1500s onwards.
