"Bank Agent's were until the 1950's semi-independent. In origins very often a branch of a Bank was established under the Agency of a local solicitor, which descended with the firm's partnership. The Bank salary/ allowances was only part of an agent's income. Most kept their insurance commissions which could equal salary. From the 1920's most banks attempted tp ease out or buy out the Agencies, and put a Manager in instead. In Bank of Scotland the last Agency disappeared in 1958."

The 1936 Glasgow Post Office Directory has the following:
"William J Sweet representing the Union Bank in Alloa."
Eric Birkett Notes:

William was small, neat, athletic but cocky.Didn't like us beating him. Freemason. He worked in Union Bank of Scotland at Clackmannan, Tillicoultry and (manager) Alloa. Willie bought Craigshields when his sister Mary died
