Glasgow PO Directory (I did not research all issues) has James Sweet
43 Paisley Road, W (I have not noted the dates at this address, come back to this)
148 Plantation Street 1889-90
142 Paisley Road West 1894-95
703 Pollokshaws Road (I have not noted the dates at this address, come back to this)

He is listed as "Of J R Middleton & Co in the directory. In the 1891 census (see above) he is a grain salesman at 148 Plantation.

So my interpretation of all of this is :
James married in 1878, went to England in 1881 to learn the trade of sales (Tobacco and clay pipe agent). (A temporary arrangement as their son, Robert aged 1) was staying with his wife's parents at the time of the census in 1881) .They returned to Glasgow before 1885 (their son George was born in Kinning Park around 1885 , source census). The PO Directory entries show he worked for JR MIdlleton & Co at least between 1889 to 95. I think he trained with JR Middleton & Co before setting up his own business some time after 1895 prior to his death in 1901. The entry for his son John Sweet in the Glasgow PO Directory for 1904-05 indicates that he worked for J Sweet & Co. His address is the same as Mr James Sweet. Possibly more research of the directories would refine the dates.
